How They Play
0 – 12 months
It is during this period that babies this ages start to make connections of the world around them and of their emotions. It’s during this period they start to learn and grow more.
During their first three months, they are barely able to do much, other than observe their surroundings. They are still not able to see clearly except items that are bright and bold.
Certain physical developments can be noticed at this stage; like your baby laughing out loud and he/she learning to walk. Moving on through the fourth months, babies tend to sleep less during the day and the majority of babies will start to sleep through the night by 6–8 months.
As your baby grows, he/she will enjoy toys that engage their other senses as well. That’s why so many toys are designed to promote interaction in a variety of ways.
Example of toys that played with by babies these ages are: rattles, unbreakable mirrors, activity boards, soft-washable and colourful stuffed animals or dolls etc.
1 – 2 years
In this age, babies are captivated by cause and effect and will enjoy any toy that responds to their actions. For example, they may tend to love toys that allow them hit a ball with a hammer as well as toys with buttons that cause music to play or characters to pop up.
Kids this age start to show visible signs of learning to talk and are exposed to language.
Example of toys suitable for babies these ages are: stacking rings, shape sorters, nesting cups, puzzles with four or five pieces, rubber ducks etc.
2 – 3 years
Within this age, your baby’s play is now more purposeful, and he/she would have acquired the fine motor skills needed to complete a puzzle or build with blocks.
Many babies at this age begin exhibiting traits of being independent, and they start to explore more. They would have developed strong hand-eye coordination and certain other skills.
Ride-on toys help these little ones explore their independence, and themed toys teach them basic concepts, words, and sounds.
You’d notice that they’d begin to enjoy playing pretend games that imitate the actions of people around them. And they may become more interested in high-tech toys, or push and pull toys. Both boy and girls are usually very active at this age.
Example of toys suitable for babies these ages are: dolls and stuffed animals, ride-on toys or tricycles, Props for make-believe play, such as toy telephone, a tea-party set, a toy kitchen, or a doll stroller, Puzzles, construction toys that snap together etc.
4 – 5 years
At this age, the learning exploration of your baby would be vastly improved. This makes it the proper time to introduce interactive educational toys that teach arithmetic and verbal skills.
Also at this age, most four year old start to develop friendship and begin to understand that people have different experiences and feelings. You could buy them character toys that will help supports this.
As they begin to turn five, you’d notice that they’ll begin to solve problems, write their names, and finish activities without waiting for directions, and so items like books or puzzles support this kind of growth.
Example of toys suitable for kids these ages are: dollhouses and doll accessories; cars, vehicles, art supplies and craft kits, soccer balls and basketballs etc.
6 – 7 years
At this stage of their growth, your child starts to develop his/her own interests while learning from both their teachers and peer mates.
This is their school-age, and so they may be more interested in toys that require strategy and skill, such as video and board games.
Their fine-motor skills are also developed enough for the small, varied pieces in art kits and fashion-doll sets.
Example of toys suitable for kids these ages are: Remote control cars, basic science kits, craft kits, Barbie dolls, computer and video games etc.
8 + years
When kids get to this age, they begin to develop lifelong interests and hobbies, and may get involved in active play and outdoor sports.
They start to acquire adult-like interests, abilities, and hobbies.
More advanced art, construction, and science toys challenge them and interest them.
Example of toys suitable for kids these ages are: arts and crafts, science kits, model kits, computer and video games, outdoor sport kits, board games, etc.
